    CROSS BREEDING

For various reasons, some farmers are seeking to cross their cows with other breeds.  Whether this is to gain highbred vigour, improve fertility or male calf quality, a cross with British Friesian will bring about all of these traits.

The unique situation, of the divergence of bloodlines within the black and white herd book of the Society, now known as Holstein UK, and the ability to make use of these genes without losing pedigree status, provides the Holstein Breeder with a straightforward solution.

With concern mounting about the levels of in-breeding, caused by placing too much emphasis on Index when selecting bulls, crossing with British Friesian provides a very real solution.
