    NEWSLETTER - JUNE 2010

‘Without employing superlatives, it is not too much to say that the animals obtained from Friesland in 1914 revolutionised the British breed.’

‘The beneficial effects of these imported cattle were so manifest that they and their direct descendents became immensely popular and created an era of fashion and high prices that is without parallel in the history of British pedigree livestock.  Today it would be almost impossible to find in the British Friesian breed an animal carrying in its veins none of the blood obtained from the importation of 1914.’

‘To such an extent has the modern British Friesian breed been built upon the foundations laid by this historic transaction that it is scarcely too much to say that the real story of the rise of the breed from obscurity to pre-eminence commences with the 60 animals secured from Friesland in 1914’

From a History of British Friesian Cattle  and The British Friesian Cattle Society - 1909 to 1930, published by the Society to celebrate its 21st birthday in 1930.

    HOLSTEIN UK
For those of you who might not have heard, Mr Greg Ward ceased his employment with Holstein UK on June 30 for personal reasons.  Mr Greg Watson, who was the Company Secretary, has taken over his responsibilities.

    COMMITTEE MEETING
The Committee were pleased to welcome Mr Tom Phillips, Chairman of HUK and Mr Greg Watson, Company Secretary to the meeting on the 29 June 2010, kindly hosted by Ben and Sally Pullen.

Various issues were discussed, chief of which was the strategy to promote the British Friesian as an ideal cross for those Holstein breeders tempted to use other breeds.  Although it was felt that these breeders were mainly non-pedigree, it was also recognised that once non-pedigree breeders took a different route other than British Friesian, then any future possibility of registering their animals would be lost, whereas pedigree breeders can retain their status due to the unique position of the Herd Book.

Of great concern was the issue of the so-called ‘Kiwi Friesian’ as these animals have very little or no Friesian in their pedigree, some of which is incomplete.  HUK are using breed code 01 for those that qualify for registration, so a more accurate description would actually be Kiwi Holstein.  The use of the word Friesian by LIC in their brochures has long been contentious as it is many, many years since they have used Friesian in their breeding programmes.

The accuracy of the computer-generated percentages of Holstein and Friesian was also discussed as the accuracy surrounding the 87.5% British Friesian is obviously critical as to which breed code is applicable.  This then led us to discuss the problem that has arisen with 01 animals being classified under the British Friesian scheme.
